Today the mention of the Kenya boxing does not capture the imagination of anyone.
Back in the 1980’s till the early 2000 whenever one mentioned the Kenya boxing team, it would send shivers down the spines of other countries and sheer raptures to Kenyan boxing fans and in fact Kenyans in general.
Right now whenever the Kenyan boxing team participates in any tournament, one can expect perhaps a bronze medal or two if Kenya is lucky.
Some say that poor leadership in the Boxing fraternity which has not been reaching out to its people for assistance, in terms of equipment and others say the lack of serious attention given to boxers but still there is no solution that can bring back the Kenyan glory.
Speaking to Bakari Welunga Kayo Boxing Coach of Ziwani says that the reason why boxing spirit has dropped is because of poor equipment which affects practice and lack of tournaments that can give experience to boxers and even something to bring home as some depend on boxing for a living.
“Boxing requires a good diet but most of the time boxers end up sleeping hungry because they lack people who look out for them” he adds.
With the new BAK President Anthony Ombok Otieno aka Jamal the scene is set to change as he is seen touring the whole country giving out boxing equipment and organizing tournaments like the recent Mombasa boxing tournament just weeks after his appointment.
“We would like the newly appointed BAK Chairman Jamal to visit Ziwani hall because the situation is alarming in terms of boxing talent and equipment more so motivation” says Bakari
There are no tournaments they are involved in but only depend on fix matches between on boxing coach to the other.
