Famous feminist and Human right defender Winny Obure and seven other activists from GHRD (a social movement of human right defenders) were yesterday arrested at the Shauri Moyo Police station after they demanded for the OB no.where an Administration Police allegedly defiled a 15year old girl in Kiambiu. The victim’s father had filed the report but the policemen who recorded his statement refused to give him the OB number.
Winny started a hashtag on twitter #Arrest Njogu to try and bring justice to the fifteen year old girl who is said to have been defiled by a police officer named Njogu at Kiambiu Slum Chief’s camp Eastleigh South. The girl who just completed her KCPE recently ,was rushed to hospital after the incident.
According to the activist, The chief lied to her that the perpetrator had been arrested and taken to Shauri Moyo police station but after they went to the station there were no records of the same. They together with the complainant lodged a complaint with the OCS who said investigations were underway. In her post on Facebook she claimed that they might be hiding Njogu to protect him from Arrest.
This comes in the wake of rising Gender Based Violence especially in the Leadership circles with cases of prominent women being sexually and physically abused by their male counterparts. The question now begs even as we usher in the 16days of GenderBasedViolence activism, how will we win this war if the same custodians of law are the ones breaking it? Will justice prevail for the thousands of victims of GBV?
For now #FreeWinny is already up on twitter in solidarity with Winny alongside the #ArrestNjogu one.
