The British Council and the Premier League, together with other UK partners, are delivering an innovative pilot programme using football to tackle issues of gender-based violence in Kenya.
The project is working with young people in Mount Elgon and Kisumu to address the behaviours and attitudes that give rise to high levels of violence against women and girls.
The programme delivers inclusive football and education activities to girls and boys aged 10–20 and conducts advocacy and capacity building work with wider.
The British Council Country Director Tony Reilly, said that the Premier skills initiative platform has shifted attitudes and the changes may lead to low levels of gender base violence.
The approach of using football to address gender based violence issues has engaged children through football by providing learning materials and training 6000 teachers on the issue of gender based violence.
The premier skills programmes has trained 100 local community coaches using football as a toll to tackle issues on violence against females in the regions.
