Tension is high at the City Market following directive by governor Mike Sonko to allow small traders [meat hawkers] to do their business inside and in front of the wholesale shops .
Today the wholesalers shut their shops to protest the move saying they are affected by small traders who are doing businesses in front of their premises.
Today’s scuffle came after another one occurred on Saturday.
The shop owners led by Cyrus Kamundia Mathenge , they pay a lot of revenue to the county and operation of small traders in front of their business has grossly affected the performance of their business.
‘‘We must have a talk with the county and everyone , there is a big problem in this market we pay huge taxes to the county government and we have invested a lot in this shops.’’ Kamundia stated.
Small traders on the other hand have vowed to stay put saying they have been operating inside the City Market for decades.
‘‘Sonko told us to do our business inside here we are going nowhere we are also traders and we have responsibilities .’’ Small Traders told Ghetto Radio News.
Meanwhile governor Mike Sonko has directed the trade department to appoint 7 member committee to look into the matter.
