Thousands of girls benefit from Majimaji’s sanitary pads initiative
Youthful leader Julius Owino popularly known as Majimaji over the weekend distributed thousands of sanitary pads to young girls in Nairobi and Kisumu County.
The girls from the less fortunate families expressed their gratitude saying most of them have been forced to use stuff like pieces of matresses and clothes during their menstrual cycle.
Some girls stated that they have also been forced to rely on their boyfriends in order to get money for sanitary pads, exposing themselves to early pregnancies.
“I am so happy for everything he has done for us. Just like he said, most of us are experiencing challenges of getting sanitary pads,” said Mercella Aketch a beneficiary of the pads.
“We used to get these sanitary pads from school but when the government closed schools because of Covid-19, we have had challenges of accessing them,” she stated.
More than 3,000 girls benefited from the initiative that saw each girl get at least two packets of Sanitary Pads.
Thousands of teenagers have reportedly fallen pregnant ever since the government closed schools over Covid-19.
Some of the girls have reportedly fallen pregnant after exchanging sex for sanitary pads.
In June more than 4,000 school going girls had allegedly become pregnant following the closure of schools.
