Protect Kenyans From GBV Cases As You Fight Covid, Lobby Group Tells The Government
Plan International is now calling on the government to pay attention to the rising numbers of gender based violence cases arguing that the GBV cases have been abandoned and are not being followed up by the relevant authorities .
In an interview with Ghetto Radio News Michael Gitere from Plan International says the police are overwhelmed by the cases and whenever they are reported, no police officers are assigned to attend to them, because more officers have been deployed to enforce the curfew.
‘‘Everywhere is shut, police stations, hospitals and even our courts recently shut their doors. You saw chief Justice David Maraga telling us that GBV cases have grown and this is a clear indicator that the the government must just wake up even as we fight Covid.’’ He said.
According to Gitere the rising cases are as a result of stress that partners are going through on effects of Covid 19.
‘’The economical effect is huge. People have lost jobs and the trend is really worrying. These are some of the reason why we have rising cases of gender based violence,’’ he added.
