Over 5,000 Rape Survivors Treated During Covid-19 Pandemic

Close 5,000 rape survivors have received medical treatment in health facilities during this period of Covid 19.

Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi says that Children below 18 years bear the greatest burden as they comprise 70% of these survivors with 5% of these survivors being male.

According to Mwangangi the country has witnessed a 7 percent increased of all forms of violence during the period of the pandemic.

Other counties like Wajir, Kisumu, Kisii, Nandi, Homabay, Turkana and Kisumu have recorded a 30 percent increase of the violence during the period of the pandemic.

“Close to 5000 rape survivors have received medical treatment in health facilities during this period of the pandemic. Children below 18 years bear the greatest burden as they comprise 70% of these survivors with 5% of these survivors being male” said Mwangangi.

Mwangangi is attributing the surge of cases to the measures put in place by the government to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Kenya has recorded the highest single day case of coronavirus  as 796 people test positive to the disease.

This brings to the total number of people who have tested positive to 15, 601.

Mwangangi stated that the new cases are Kenyans aged between one year and 87 years old.

In terms of gender, the new cases consist of 503 male and 293 with the Ministry of Health announcing that 99% of the new cases are asymptomatic.
