By Allan Otieno
The Nairobi County Assembly has pulled another pocket shocker to their electorates, this after the MCAs passed a motion to allocate themselves house allowances despite Salaries and Remuneration Commission terming it illegal.
The motion was tabled by Riruta Member of the County Assembly James Kiriba.
The motion received 98% support with only two members opposing it.
According to Majority Leader Abdi Guyo,t MCAs are classified as state officers have thetherefore giving them the rights to enjoy the house allowance perks.
‘‘This is a resolution that was passed by county assembly forum and SRC knows it we need house allowances, we are state officers and nobody should discriminate against us…how can we oversight Ksh. 32 billion with 50 thousand monthly salary?’’ he asked.
Meanwhile Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu has differed with his colleagues calling for their sobriety.
‘‘ I cannot support this , how can we award ourselves house allowances yet the Wanjiku is crying for service delivery and at the same time our country is struggling economically..its uncalled for and unconstitutional,’’ Kiaragu said.
The assembly is now expected to take its resolution to the SRC for its consent before it is effected.
Parliament is already in court with SRC over the same perks.
