Out of 1079 operational clinics within Nairobi City County,126 clinics have been closed for not having the required documents to provide medical services.
The crack down comes in the wake of a public outcry over mushrooming of illegal clinics in the county following the death of Dandora activist Carol Mwatha who is believed to have undergone a botched abortion that led to her death.
Speaking to Ghetto Radio News Health Committee Chairperson Peter Warutere says the move was taken to ensure all clinics operating in Nairobi adhere to the regulations .
‘‘If we let it go this way then Kenyans are in safe hands particularly those living in slums, some are even operating with form four certificates as recently witnessed in Mathare, we need more enforcement.’’ He said.
According to Warutere the county government has few enforcement officers and the current team doing patrol and enforcement is incapacitated to deal with illegal clinics.
He says they will continue engaging the government and other professional bodies to ensure that illegal clinics are wed out of Nairobi.
He also urged Nairobi City County Government to equip and restore public confidence in county health centers.
Meanwhile six suspects in the murder of activist Carol Mwatha will be detained for a few more days. Four out of the six suspects were operating an illegal clinic in Dandora phase 2 where police says Mwatha procured the abortion that led to her demise.
