Nairobi County MCAs Sharply Divided Over Sonko’s Impeachment
Members of the County Assembly of Nairobi City County are sharply divided over plans to impeach the embattled governor Mike Sonko and today those opposed to the plans say the county is running well and that the matter should not be politicised to bring Sonko regime down.
MCAs were led by Majority Leader Charles Thuo who stated that calls to impeach Sonko are immature and that the MCAs should leave courts to deal with the graft case facing the governor.
‘‘The county is running smoothly most of the functions are not being performed by the governor directly , but the floor is open to those who want to impeach our governor. Let the bring the motion in the floor we shall deal with it like any other motion,’’ Thuo said.
In an interview with Ghetto Radio, Minority Leader David Mberia stated that they are still waiting for a directive from the ODM leader Raila Amollo Odinga.
The Minority whip Peter Imwatok is the one leading another faction that wants to impeach governor Sonko. Today he met a section of MCAs at Windsor to chart the way forward on the same.
Meanwhile Speaker Beatrice Elachi has failed to gazette a special sitting as requested by Mberia saying that there is no need of such actions.
‘‘We want to say that we have written to the Attorney General requesting for an advisory over this matter , it will give as a clear legal frame work to deal with this issue,’’ Elachi said.
Sonko is also waiting eagerly on the court of appeal ruling on Justice Mumbi Ngugi’s ruling barring state officers charged with graft from accessing their offices. It will be delivered Friday this week.
