A young man in Mathare slums has received a United Nations Award over his efforts to manage garbage and employ the youth.

Isaac Muasa who was born in Mlango was awarded by the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour  on Tuesday over his efforts to clean up Mathare and employ the youth.

Through his organization Mathare Conservation Group popularly known as Pequininos, Muasa recruited some youths who would walk door to door educating the community on the importance of keeping the environment clean.

He says they then came up with garbage bags that they would issue to houses at a small fee.

Muasa says after lobbying politicians to help them clear illegal dumpsites, they would on the sites just to ensure the community does not dump garbage there anymore.

With very little resources the group has managed to keep the area clean and has even come up with a football team to help keep the youth from crime.

He says the Tuesday award which was issued by the president has encouraged them to keep working hard and further  keep the environment clean.
