A section of Mathare slum dwellers are still living in structures next to the river despite the recent floods that have hit the country.

The slum dwellers claim that they still stay there due to the low cost houses compared to other areas in the slum.

Mathare police commander Kigumo Langat has however cautioned that the heavy rains being experienced are a threat to the houses near the river.

He gave this directive after some houses in the area were destroyed by the rains over the weekend.

Commander Langat has asked the residents not to rebuild houses where they were swept away by floods.

He has further cautioned the residents to avoid using the rain water since it may be contaminated and cause health risks.
