A Spanish court has sentenced Barcelona soccer star Lionel Messi to 21 months in prison over tax fraud, various news agencies reported Wednesday morning.

He has also been fined 2 million euros for three tax crimes.

Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, were charged with three counts of tax fraud, accused of failing to properly pay taxes for part of his earnings from Barcelona, becoming the latest high-profile player to have to deal with Spain’s tough tax system.

Messi had denied having knowledge of the tax issues, saying he signed documents without reading them because he trusted his father and the advisers responsible for managing his finances.
