Joy Doreen Biira a journalist at KTN was arrested in Uganda after she circulated photos and videos on her social media of the massacre that left 55 people dead. Biira who had traveled to her home country for her traditional wedding took to her social media pages where she expressed her dismay at how the clashes between the police and militia had left part of the palace of the Rwenzeruru kingdom burnt to the ground , terming it a destruction of heritage as she knew it.
The business anchor was nubbed alongside her Fiance Newton Kungu from her uncle’s home in Kasese by uniformed men yesterday evening and their whereabouts still remain scanty. Ms Biira who works and lives in Nairobi had just visited the country for her traditional wedding.
KOT have shown their solidarity by condemning their arrest and calling for her immediate release through #FreeJoyDoreen. Kenyans have termed this a violation of Press Freedom and have also called for sanity condemning the dictatorship from President Yoweri’s reign.
The clashes between the kingdom loyalists and national government forces have hit the headlines with gory pictures of dead bodies from the violence circulating the social media . The king, Charles Wesley Mumbere is accused of inciting violence after militiamen reportedly attacked a police post in his hometown of Kasese. He has since been arrested and has denied any involvement. The militia has been accused of wanting to break away from Uganda and form their own state called Lyiira.
Emerging reports now indicate that Ms Biira might be released anytime soon on bond as photos of her walking in the cells bare feet circulated the webs this morning.
