A KCPE candidate in Nairobi’s Korogocho slums has defied poverty and cancer odds and performed well in the KCPE exams.

Fourteen year old Eugene Leon who has been taking care of his aliling mother who is suffering from cancer scored 336 marks in the exams.

Leone says revising for exams has been hard as he would often be forced to take care of his mother who is in constant pain due to her condition.

“I would try to sit down and revise for the exams but then, i would hear my mother writhing in pain forcing me to drop everything and attend to her. Her illness took toll of me, i wouldn’t get the courage to read. Most of the times i would find myself blank,” said Leone.

He says her mother’s condition further subjected them to poverty as they would sometimes go without food.

Leone is however attributing his better performance to his teachers and his mother’s friends who would from time to time chip and assist him and his little brother.

“Some of my mother’s friends would come to check on us and bring us a little something. Some teachers would offer free tuition because they understood mys sitiation,” said Leone.

Leone wishes to join Starehe Boys Center and hopefully become an engineer.

Leone’s father abandoned them when he was young and in pre – unit.
