Kisumu residents have nothing to smile about this Christmas following the rising growth of water hyacinth weed in Lake Victoria.

The residents claim the hyacinth weed has brought affected income from their once vibrant businesses being carried out in the lake and at the shores of the Lake.

Elisha Otieno a boat rider says his income has drastically decreased to a paltry Ksh. 100 a day from Ksh. 5,000 in a day.

According to Otieno fishermen are currently forced to risk their lives and go way deeper into the ocean in order to catch fish.

Some of the businesses affected include fishing, car wash business and hotel business.
