Kenyans have flocked social media to mourn Kikuyu Benga singer John De Mathew who passed on in a car accident.

DeMathew died on Sunday night after his car rammed into a Truck on the Thika super highway.

Gatanga Member of Parliament, Nduati Ngugi said the singer died on the spot and his body was taken to Thika Nursing Home before being transferred to the Kenyatta University mortuary.

Many of his fans and fellow celebrities have described him a great leader who influenced the Kenyan music scene.

“Black Sunday. It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of John De’Matthew, a leading Kikuyu musician and a great leader of our times who has greatly influenced the music scene in the central region, beyond and across generations.” Wrote singer Samidoh

“Oh My!  The man who gave us, Niwe Njata Yakwa, You are my star – very poetic music and a prophetic musician too. Go well bro. #RIPDemathew” tweeted Dennis Itumbi

“John Demathew was a hero. His music was banned by Moi,  arrested during Kibaki’s time and had an ongoing court case in current Uhuru tenure. Because fearlessly fought for Wanjiku and called out on hypocritical politicians” wrote Sedaula Mwangi

‏ @allen_arnold said “I’ve always ranked John Demathew among the music elites. With his originality, he’s in the same class as Tupac, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson.”
