Kenya to host the 2017 World English Scrabble Championship

Kenya will next year host The World English Scrabble Championship for the first time,with over 50 countries expected to participate in the Tournament in Nairobi,early November,2017.

Scrabble Kenya bids to hold 14 Scrabble qualifier matches across the country.The event,beginning with Machakos County in August 2016,will be used to prepare players intending to contest for slots in team Kenya to the Championship.

Kenya will be the first African Nation to host the competition in what promises to be a busy season for the country.

“We acknowledge that Kenya, among the 32 countries that bid for the most prestigious event in the English Language Board Game has been recognized” says Patrick Gitonga Nderitu who is a member of the Local Organizing Committee.

Kenya is ranked second in the world behind Australia and second also in Africa behind Nigeria.Kenya key players  include Allan Oyende,Stanley Njoroge  and highly rated Gitonga  Nderitu among others.

This year the tournament has attracted over 300 scrabble players drawn from East,West,Central and Southern Africa and 276000 players World wide.

Sport Kenya Inspector General Gordon Oluoch  officially launched the tournament saying by hosting the global event,Kenya will be able to market its tourist attraction and showcase Kenya  as a safe  country.
He assured Scrabble  Kenya(SK) that the Government through Sport Kenya will support the hosting of the  global event.
