Kenya’s Peres Jepchichir has set a new record in the world women’s half marathon by running 01:05:06 at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in UAE on Friday morning to bag over Ksh15m.
Jepchirchir, the World Half Marathon champion thus becomes the third woman in history to break the 67 minutes record.
This happens after breaking the previous record of 01:05:06 set by Florence Kiplagat in Barcelona way back in 2015.
She took home staggering $50,000 (Ksh 5,182,500) for the win. This comes with an additional $100,000 (Ksh10, 365,000) for breaking the existed world record.
However, she was unaware of the marvelous information until broadcaster Rob Walker broke the news to her on air after the race.
Jepchirchir put in extra energy to smash the world record. However, her form was completely slowing down as she came closer to the finish line.
Her passion drove her and the determination saw her achieve the most adorable goal. She collapsed immediately after winning the race line but she had to be carried away from the finish area.
The race was not just historic but as well beating Keitany who managed as runner-up in 1:05:13 putting her third on the all-time list. This was the first time Keitany had lost a half marathon race since 2007.
