Health Ministry Principal Secretary Susan Mochache has formed a special team to look into cases of patients being detained for failing to pay medical bills.

In a circular, the PS tasked the team to probe nine private and public hospitals.

The hospitals include Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Nairobi Hospital, the Aga Khan University Hospital and Mater Hospital among others.

The team is expected to make recommendations within ten days.

The move comes just hours after a local media house exposed the Kenyatta National Hospital for detaining 20 patients who could not raise money to clear their bill. Some of the women claimed to have been at the facility for over a year.
