Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has vowed to take stern action against the county askaris who teargassed passengers inside a matatu.
The Tuesday night incident which happened within Nairobi CBD left three passengers injured.
“Hawa watakiona (They will face my wrath) Why throw a tear gas canister to passengers when provoked by PSV operators. My apologies kwa wale wametupiwa tear gas,” Sonko said
The Umoja-bound matatu was also partially burned during the Tuesday night incident along Tom Mboya Street
The city inspectorate officers accused the driver of obstruction and illegal parking but the driver maintains that he did nothing wrong.
“There was nothing wrong I had done because I had parked the vehicle by the roadside and I was not blocking anyone,” said Peter Kariuki, the matatu driver
The askaris, who were in the company of police officers, reportedly threw a teargas canister inside the matatu engulfing the passenger aboard in choking smoke. The canister’s explosion also started a fire in the bus.
