Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko discovered 12 bodies of infants at Pumwani Maternity Hopital following an impromptu visit at the facility on Monday morning.
The bodies were wrapped and stuffed in different boxes and hidden in a store.
Upon inquiry the ward wing administrator, told the governor who arrived at the facility on a boda boda (motorcycle) that the facility had lost only one infant in the last 24 hours which turned out not to be the case.
Sonko, through his Facebook page, said he conducted the impromptu raid after claims by members of the public that the management shut down machines at the maternity wing leading to loss of lives of young ones.
‘‘I received a video this morning showing all these mess and this is a police case we can not allow human life to be lost like his, losing more than twelve babies in a day can not be taken lightly,’’ Sonko said.
The governor also promised stern action against the hospital’s management.
“Stern action will be taken against anyone found to be sabotaging the good services offered to our mothers and sisters who come to deliver in this facility.” he said
Mothers at the facilities have also shifted the blame to the staff whom they say facilitate the storage of bodies of dying infants.
Meanwhile top bosses at the hospital have been suspended pending thorough investigations into the matter.
Dr.Mueke has been appointed the new superintendent at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
