A Githurai matatu tout lost his life after his girlfriend and her mother Rosemary Nyawira hired a gang to “discipline” him.
According to the investigating officer, the tout, Dennis Okumu (23) was lured by his girlfriend Esther Wambui (21) to Karatina where he met his death.
The girl alleged that Okumu had been physically abusing her leading her to hire gangs to ‘teach him a lesson’
Corporal Eliud Odhiambo told a Nyeri court that Ms Wambui, a student at Utalii College, held a grudge against Okumu over physical abuse and had intended to have him roughed up to get back at him.
“The mother, who works at a Karatina hospital, confessed to the crime. The deceased had taken supper at his in-laws’ home and was killed while being escorted to where he was to sleep. The family had hired five assailants to discipline the deceased but it turned tragic and they ended up killing him,” said corporal Odhiambo
Okumu’s body was found at Kirimara in Mathira East sub-county with his eyes gouged out and a number of stab wounds to the neck.
A boda boda operator was allegedly paid Ksh. 3000 to dump Okumu’s body.
Justice Abigail Mshilla heard that it was not the first time Okumu had been roughed up by thugs.
A close confidant of the deceased told the court that at one point Okumu was accosted by thugs as he left his girlfriend’s house in Zimmerman, Nairobi. The thugs hit him with a log on the head.
One of the thugs hired to rough up Okumu is reported to have tipped off the police.
After the incident,Wambui returned to the City alone and started asking whereabouts of the deceased, suggesting that they had not traveled together to her rural home.
The deceased and Wambui have one child together.
The case will be heard on June 4, 2019
