Forward Travellers Sacco and Pinpoint Sacco Matatu touts plying the Kayole route are on the spot over claims of extorting fares from unsuspecting passengers.
Angry passengers who spoke to Ghetto Radio News say that the touts lie to passengers over the amount of money they charge only to demand for more inside the matatu.
They claim othat a protest over the high amount is always met by physical assault from the touts.
“The problem is they wait until the matatu has left the bust stop and moved quite a distance before they start collecting fares. I once helped a woman pay the added amount after she could not raise it,” said one passenger.
According to the passengers most of the vehicles are manned by at least three conductors who start collecting fares from different sections of the road.
“One starts from the front and the other one starts from the back while the third conductor collects money from the middle. So there is no way one can leave the vehicle without paying the amount the conductors are demanding,” he said.
They are now calling on the Nairobi County Government and the other relevant authorities to look into the issue before it goes out of hand.
