Former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba suffered a horrific injury in the Chinese Super League’s Shanghai derby on Sunday.
Ba, 31, had netted 14 goals in 18 appearances for Shanghai Shenhua this season but appeared to badly break his leg in a tangle with a Shanghai SIPG FC defender.
The Senegal international was taken off on 70 minutes as Fredy Guarin’s late penalty saw Shenhua pick up a 2-1 win after almost 10 minutes of injury time which included the sending off of Jiajie Wang.
The Senegal forward, who also had spells with West Ham and Newcastle during his time in the Premier League, was extremely unfortunate to see his leg twisted after an awkward fall during a game.
Shanghai Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano admitted the injury could threaten to end Ba’s career at the age of just 31.
‘It could end his professional career,’ Manzano said after the game.
Ba remains much loved by Chelsea fans for his memorable goal in the 2-0 win over Liverpool in 2014, which resulted in the Reds’ title challenge collapsing at the final hurdle.
Fans everywhere will now be hoping the prolific front-man can recover to play again, as some other high-profile footballers have done in recent years.
