Well, this is not and will probably not be the last time local artistes complain of being underpaid by the responsible boards managing their money.
Early this year, trio band Elani took to social to accuse the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) for underpaying them despite doing so good in the previous years. The band is allegedly said to have received 31,000/- as annual payments from their hit songs- Koo Koo, Jana Usiku amongst others.
Expectedly, this caused a media uproar that ended sour for Elani after Octopizzo paraded their ignorance to attend MCSK meetings live on national TV on The Trend with Larry Madowo. It was ugly trust me.
The effect of artistes’ monies being mishandled has not only affected secular artistes but Gospel artistes as well. Bahati and Willy Paul might not get affected directly, thanks to live show performance contracts but “Nimekubali” artiste one Eunice Njeri has now felt the nail in the a**.
The soft spoken truly Gospel songstress is crying foul not to MCSK but to Kenya’s largest service provider Safaricom for making Kshs. 30 million from HER music when she is being forced to live hand to mouth.
Njeri took to her Instagram and Facebook to express her pain and literally begged Safaricom to remember her since she cannot do anything.
Eunice is not the first artiste to face related issues as Ringtone had already had it rough with MCSK to a point where words like “law suits” were the order of the day. Seems like he gave up or just “Tenda Wema” and vanished.
Kenyans on social media has since asked Safaricom to respond to Njeri’s issues which is yet to happen.
