Jacques Tuyisenge and Godfrey Walusimbi scored second-half goals to help Gor Mahia defeat Mathare United 2-0 and advance to the second position in the Sportpesa Premier League at the Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
Tuyisenge netted his 6th score since the beginning of the season in the 82nd minute while Walusimbi scored in the 63rd minute giving Ze Maria’s side 26 points,2 points after Tusker who are sitting at the top with 28 points.
It had been billed as the clash of the weekend but after being held back for the first hour, Gor’s class showed as they shifted through the gears to register their fifth successive league win. Mathare battled gamely but could not find an answer to K’Ogalo’s panache, drive and intensity.
The first half had been pretty cagey with Mathare content to sit back and let Gor have the ball and the same continued in the opening 20 minutes of the second half before Walusimbi scored a contender for goal of the season on 68 minutes.
The Ugandan winger turned Mathare defender David Mwangi inside out before finding the top corner with a delightful curling effort that gave goalkeeper Peter Odhiambo no chance.
Mathare tried to respond with coach Francis Kimanzi throwing on Harrison Mwendwa in place of fullback Noah Abich as they chased for an equalizer.
It was Gor however that got a second goal seven minutes from time when enterprising left back Eric Ouma exploited the space left by Abich’s departure before delivering a pinpoint cross that was headed home emphatically by Tuyisenge for his sixth goal of the season.
