Barcelona and Juventus both picked up quality results on Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal round ahead of next week’s second leg.
Barca went to Manchester United with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez helping set up an own goal from Luke Shaw to earn a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. It’s the club’s first victory at the Theater of Dreams.
Juventus got a goal from Cristiano Ronaldo late in the first half and earned a 1-1 draw at Ajax despite being outplayed, with Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny coming up big when his team needed him most.
As a result of this week’s first legs, Juventus, Barcelona, Spurs and Liverpool have the early edge.
United have never beaten Barca in the Camp Nou, but despite losing the first leg, they will travel to Catalonia next Wednesday believing they can end that barren run to reach the semifinals.
Plenty needs to go in United’s favour for Solskjaer’s players to book a likely last-four encounter with Liverpool, who lead Porto 2-0 ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg in Estadio do Dragao, but after coming face to face with Messi & Co. at Old Trafford, they should travel without fear.
