President Mwai Kibaki officially opened the refurbished chamber of
the National Assembly and urged legislators to use the remaining time of
their parliamentary term to improve the lives of Kenyans.

Speaking at Parliament buildings during the opening ceremony,
Kibaki emphasized that Members of Parliament should ensure that the
current House goes down in history for its role in uplifting the quality
of the lives of Kenyan workers, farmers, business people, youth and
children.

After serving the people of Kenya in Parliament for 50 years, the
President said he could confidently state that the destiny and fortunes of
the nation depends a great deal on the character and composition of
Parliament.

In this connection, the Head of State called on Kenyans to carefully vet
those they will elect to serve in Parliament during the forthcoming
General Election.

He said only diligent and selfless men and women of integrity who have
interests of Kenyans at heart should be elected.
President Kibaki, once again, assured all Kenyans that the Government is
putting in place measures to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.

The President also reassured that the Government will support the IEBC in
acquiring the biometric voter registration equipment that would contribute
to the credibility of the electoral process.

In attendance were Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Chief Justice
Willy Mutunga, acting Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet Mr.
Francis Kimemia, Ambasadors and High Commissioners among other  senior
government officials and invited guests.
