CCK creates system for tracking genuine handsets

`The Communications Commission of Kenya-CCK has established a verification system for tracking genuine handsets which will be used to curb mobile phone related crimes.

CCK Acting Director General Francis Wangusi says the Electronic Identification Register can however only work with genuine handsets, therefore the need to switch off all counterfeit mobile phones by September 30th.

Speaking at a media briefing, Wangusi urged Kenyans to be careful when buying phones to avoid being inconvenienced by the September deadline.

Deputy Police spokesperson Charles Owino says all foreigners entering the country will also need to formally apply for mobile phone SIM cards from local service providers upon their arrival in the country to reduce crime.
